Watermelon and Hemp Make a Good Combo

What’s summer without watermelon? As a kid, it was always a fun summer gathering with cousins and neighborhood kids hanging at the picnic table eating watermelon and engaging in a seed spitting contest. Today, most watermelon is seedless and their availability is not limited to July. Eating a slice to the rind while juice drips down your chin is still a favorite. I’ve put together some additional great eating ideas for enjoying watermelon. It doesn’t take much to put watermelon and hemp together for a healthy refreshing SuperSnack. We’ve included a few recipes for getting the most out of your watermelon.

Why Watermelon Is the Ultimate Hot-Weather Snack

Now that fresh watermelon is coming into season, it’s an opportunity to bring it home for healthy eating enjoyment. When the heat is on, watermelon does more than satisfy a sweet craving—it helps your body stay balanced, hydrated, and refreshed. Here’s why it’s a smart choice when temperatures are on the rise:

  1. Hydration Hero: Watermelon is over 90% water, making it a delicious way to beat dehydration. It’s basically nature’s sports drink—minus the sugar crash.

  2. Electrolyte Boost: Packed with potassium and magnesium, watermelon helps replenish electrolytes lost through sweat.

  3. Cooling Effect: Its high water content and light texture have a natural cooling effect on your body—perfect after a walk, swimming, workout, or a moment of sun-soaked bliss.

  4. Skin Support: Rich in lycopene and vitamin C, watermelon helps fight oxidative stress and may even protect skin from sun damage.

  5. Digestive Friendly: It’s easy on the gut and refreshing to eat, even when your appetite dips from the heat.

As a kid, I have to admit, we didn’t really care about the nutrition watermelon provided; we just liked eating it and wanted to be the winner of the seed-spitting contest 🙂

Drizzle over the salad mixture to taste - place in the refrigerator to chill and marinate for a bit

Notes

If you need to make this salad ahead of time, combine all the ingredients except for the watermelon, in a glass or plastic bowl with an airtight cover. You'll need another airtight bowl for the watermelon. A bit before serving, add the watermelon and top with the dressing - chill in the refrigerator once combined. You'll want the watermelon and dressing to marinate for a bit with the other ingredients to enhance the flavors.
Thanks Suzy for this great summer salad.
